The ancestors of chess originated in northern India during the Gupta Empire, where its early form in the 6th century was known as Chaturanga. The game then grew in popularity within Southern Europe. The entire Asian continent soon followed suit and following the Moorish conquest of Spain. In 1913, a book titled A History of Chess, by Harold James Ruthven Murray stated that chess originally came from Northern India, then spread to Persia. Did you know that the longest official chess game lasted 269 moves and ended in a draw? Despite being already established as a game that goes back decades into the past, with the earliest record of it being played almost 1500 years ago, the exact roots of chess is widely disputed, as both its place and person of origin remain unclear.
